Introduction
Ce guide sera en perpétuel
processus d’élaboration par tous ceux et celles qui, suite à leur visite à la
Isla, voudront y ajouter informations, suggestions, commentaires ou
recommandations. Veuillez vous adresser à auberge@alagloiredumatin.qc.ca
. À travers tout le texte, les prix seront exprimés en pesos mexicains. Pour
faciliter vos calculs vous pouvez considérer qu’il y a en moyenne 10 pesos et
plus dans le dollar Canadien ainsi que dans le dollar Américain.
L’arrivée
À l’aéroport 
Si vous le souhaitez, quelqu’un vous
attendra à l’aéroport pour faciliter votre arrivée et vous amener à votre
cuarto en camion-taxi. Pour se faire vous devez nous avoir communiqué votre No
de vol ainsi que le jour et l’heure d’arrivée. Le coût est de 300 pesos. C’est
déjà l’aventure qui commence car vous traverserez la plantation de coco pour
vous rendre au village. La route est un peu cahoteuse mais pittoresque, le
trajet est d’une trentaine de minutes. Vous pourriez aussi demander un taxi qui
vous amènera à l’embarcadero de l’Isla. Idéalement
choisissez des billets d’avion qui vous permettent d’arriver de jour.
Au terminal d’autobus
Si vous arrivez par autobus, sachez que
le terminal est au cœur de Mazatlan. À l’arrivée au
terminal prenez un pulmonia (c’est une petite voiture
avec une banquette et c'est le transport de choix à Mazatlan).
Avant d’embarquer dans un véhicule
offrez 30 pesos pour vous rendre à l’embarcadero de
l’Isla de la Piedra. On vous demandera probablement 40 pesos et c’est OK.
À L’embarcadero
En arrivant à l’embarcadero
dirigez vous au guichet pour acheter votre billet de ‘’résident’’ à 6 pesos
(les touristes du jour doivent payer 12 pesos). Remarquez que vous passez tout
à côté du marché des pêcheurs de l’Isla pour acheter le meilleur poisson frais.
Si vous avez besoin d’aide avec vos bagages, des gens se feront un plaisir de
les mettre à bord pour vous (un pourboire de 5 pesos par bagage est apprécié).
Puis descendez pour embarquer à bord d'un petit bateau-taxi en remettant votre
billet au contrôleur sur le quai.
5 à 10 minutes plus tard, vous arrivez à
l’Isla où il y aura des véhicules-taxi. Ce sont des camionnettes avec
banquettes. Offrez 25 pesos avant d’embarquer pour aller à la ‘’casa de Chabela (Isabelle en
espagnol) en la playa’’. On vous demandera peut-être 30 pesos et c’est Ok.
Les gens sur place
Isabelle est l’heureuse propriétaire et
elle a 3 beaux enfants : Vincent, Gabriella et Maya. Isabelle est
Québécoise et c’est la co-fondatrice d'Éco-coco.
Elle a mis sur pied un atelier de transformation de la noix de coco en objets
décoratifs et en bijoux. L'atelier est à quelques rues des cuartos mais la
boutique est sur le même terrain que votre cuarto. Cette boutique fait partie
des attractions de l’endroit car elle est construite avec de l’argile et des
matériaux recyclés dont le verre et les bouteilles de verre.
Les installations
Les cuartos sont au début d'une plage déserte
de 20 kilomètres et ils sont situés sur la plage à l'entrée du village. Il faut
donc s'attendre à vivre au rythme mexicain (les coqs chantent très tôt le matin
et la musique est omniprésente). L’environnement sonore est extrêmement
variable. Nous avons vécu à l’Isla à plusieurs reprises et à différentes
périodes de l’année (janvier, avril et novembre). Les matins sont calmes, après
le chant du coq, on déjeune avec comme fond sonore, le va et vient des vagues.
Puis le village se réveille doucement avec les livraisons quotidiennes
de : tortillas, poulet et poisson frais, eau, gaz, fruits et légumes… Vers
midi ça peut s’animer un peu, on entend en sourdine de la musique mexicaine et
occasionnellement la musique s’intensifie surtout en fin d’après-midi. De façon
générale, on retrouve la grande tranquillité vers 21 heures mais à l’occasion
lors d’une fiesta, on peut entendre de la musique plus tard.
Pendant la période de Pâques qui est la
fête la plus importante de l’année au Mexique, la musique était parfois plus
forte sur des périodes plus prolongées, presque tous les jours, pour presque 2
semaines. Il y avait vraiment une ambiance festive. De mai à novembre, c’est
plus tranquille car il fait plus chaud et il y a encore moins de monde à
l’Isla.
Chacun des cuartos a une cuisine avec un
poêle et petit frigo ainsi qu’un bon équipement pour faire des repas. Vous y
retrouverez probablement des ingrédients laissés par ceux qui y sont restés
avant vous (sel, poivre, sucre, café, thé, savon à vaisselle, détergent, papier
de toilette, etc..). On vous demande de
remplacer ce que vous terminez. ‘’Passez au suivant’’.
Il y a aussi un brasero (Bar-B-Q) sur la
terrasse pour faire des grillades et un hamac pour la siesta. Vous pourrez
trouver du charbon de bois (carbon) au Super City Deli de l’embarcadero.
L’eau
Vous aurez besoin d’eau embouteillé pour
boire, faire la cuisine, vous brosser les dents etc. Pas de problème l’eau ne
coûte pas cher. Vous aurez une grosse bouteille de 20 litres à votre arrivée
dans votre cuarto. Ainsi qu’une bouteille de rechange. Lorsque vous en avez une
de vide soyez attentif et vers 8 h 30 le matin vous verrez un camion passer
avec des bouteilles d’eau, il circule lentement en klaxonnant. Vous n’avez qu’à
crier ‘Agua’ et il va s’arrêter et vous apporter une bouteille directement dans
votre cuarto en échange d’une bouteille vide et de 12 pesos. Pour l’Iguana, il peut être plus difficile d’entendre le camion
passé. Vous n’aurez qu’à remettre votre bouteille vide à Isabelle et elle
s’assurera que vous ayez votre bouteille d’eau. Si la bouteille que vous avez
est très vieille, il se peut qu’il ne veule pas la reprendre et il vous
demandera de payer 60 pesos pour la bouteille qu’il a apporté car la bouteille
vide coûte 50 pesos.
L’épicerie
Il y a plusieurs dépanneurs (Abarrotes) sur l’Isla et certains sont très près de votre
cuarto. On trouve que Magdalena, propriétaire de ‘Abarrotes
Los Mangos’ (en face du poste de police), a le
meilleur choix et les meilleur prix. On peut même y commander du poulet frais
pour le lendemain. Deux vendeurs de fruits et légumes passent tous les jours
vers l’heure du midi. Ils offrent aussi des œufs et quelques articles de
première nécessité. Les vendeurs se feront un plaisir de vous apprendre le nom
des fruits et légumes en espagnol.
Près de l’embarcadero
il y a une éicerie, le Super City Deli,
avec les produits de première nécessité dont la Cerveza
et la Téquila. La bière locale est la Pacifico, c’est la distillerie qui
produit la Corona et la Modelo. On voit la
distillerie de l’Isla lorsqu’on va prendre le bateau-taxi.
IL y a aussi un grand marché public et
un supermarché ‘Ley’ (sur la rue Melchor
Ocampo) dans le vieux Mazatlan.
Si vous êtes des amateurs de bon café, il vous faudra vous rendre près de la Plaza Machado à Mazatlan, à l’El
Faro ou à La Casa Etnika. Leur mélange maison ainsi
que le café du Chiapas sont particulièrement remarquable (la marque El Marino
peut aussi être trouvé un peu partout même sur l’île).
Les restaurants
Vous pouvez faire confiance aux restos
de l’Isla, nous n’avons jamais été malades. Il y a plusieurs petits restaurants
sur la plage. En partant de votre cuarto vers l’est à votre gauche vous avez
‘’El Cardon’’ et d’autres. Vers l’ouest à votre droite, il y a Victor, puis Lettie, Carmelita, et d’autres.
Ce sont des restos pour les touristes et ils ferment presque tous en fin
d’après-midi sauf Carmelita qui est souvent ouvert
plus tard et Lettie qui acceptera de vous servir à
souper si vous vous présentez vers 17h30-18h00.
Pour un petit repas léger le soir, vous
pouvez aller ‘Chez Miguel’ au coin de la rue (calle Antero
et calle principal). Il y a un aussi plusieurs petits restos à l’embarcadero et juste en face du Super City Deli. Ce sont tous des casse-croute
mexicains bons et pas cher.
Pour un souper plus extravagant, il y a
tous les restos de Mazatlan mais particulièrement les
restaurants et terrasses autour de la Plaza Machado
qui est fermée à la circulation automobile le soir.
L’argent 
Pour vos dépenses vous aurez besoin de
pesos. À votre arrivée à l’aéroport il y a un guichet automatique (ATM). Sur
l’île, le guichet le plus prêt n’est pas loin de l’embarcadero
coté Mazatlan. Quand vous sortez du bateau, suivez la
rue jusqu’au coin du boulevard et suivez le boulevard vers la droite. Vous
verrez alors un garage Pemex de l’autre côté de la
rue, continuez encore un peu. Vous verrez alors de l’autre côté de la rue en
biais une compagnie de construction et la Régie des eaux (Jumapan).
Traversez pour remonter cette rue et tout de suite au bas d’un édifice avec des
marches bleu il y a un guichet de la banque Banorte.
Si
vous préférez prendre un pulmonia à l’embarcadero vous demandez qu’on vous amène à la Cathédral
et tout autour il y a plusieurs banques avec guichets. De la Cathédral vous
pourrez facilement vous rendre à pied au marché ou à la Plaza
Machado.

Vous pouvez vous adresser directement à Lilia Cardenas, propriétaire de Lavenderia Rosita (rue
Miguel Cardenas, c’est la rue de l’atelier d’Éco-coco)

Ventilateur
Dans l’Iguana
les ventilateurs et plafonniers fonctionnent avec un contrôle à distance.
Assurez-vous de le laisser dans le cuarto. En cas de bris ou de perte ayez la
gentillesse de laisser 500 pesos pour qu’on puisse le remplacer.
Internet
Il y a un
local internet tout près du Super City Deli, c’est
lent mais ça ne coûte que 12 pesos de l’heure et ça dépanne. Pour ceux qui ont
un portable la connexion sans fil est accessible de votre cuarto ou sur le
terrain autour car le serveur est dans la maison d’Isabelle et le router est
dans l’Aquila. Assurez-vous de demander le mot de passe.

Isla de la Piedra
Introduction
This
guide will continually be elaborated by those whose visit to the Isla will have
prompted them to share information, suggestions, commentaries or
recommendations. Please write us at Auberge@alagloiredumatin.qc.ca . Throughout this
document, prices will be expressed in Mexican Pesos. To facilitate your exchanges you can consider that there is an average
of 10 and more Pesos per Canadian dollar as well as per American Dollar.
The
Arrival
At the airport
If you wish,
someone will be waiting for you at the airport to bring you directly to your
cuarto in a taxi-truck. You must have previously communicated your flight No as
well as the date and time of arrival. The cost is 300 pesos. Your adventure has
already started because you will be going through the coconut plantations to
get to the village. It’s a dirt road but also very scenic, the trip should take
about thirty minutes. You could also ask a taxi to bring you to the embarcadero
for the Isla. Ideally you should choose plane tickets that permit you to arrive
during the day.
At
the bus terminal
If you arrive by
bus, remember that the bus terminal is in the heart of Mazatlan. At your
arrival at the bus terminal take a pulmonia (it’s an open air taxi typical of
Mazatlan).
Before getting
in offer 30 pesos for the ride to the embarcadero of the Isla. They may ask you
for 40 pesos which is OK.
At
the embarcadero
Upon arriving at
the embarcadero go to the ticket booth and buy your tickets of ‘’residents’’ at
6 pesos per person (day tourist must pay 12 pesos). Pay attention because you
are passing through the Isla’s fishermen’s market where you can buy the
freshest fish. If you need help with your luggages, people will gladly take
them on board (a gratuity of 5 pesos a piece will be appreciated). Then go down
the wharf and get aboard the taxi-boat. Don’t forget to give your ticket to the
controller at the top of the wharf.
5 to 10 minutes
later, you will arrive at the Isla where there will be taxi-trucks waiting.
Offer 25 pesos to go to the ‘’casa de Chabela (Isabelle in spanish)
en la playa’’.
The
people
Isabelle is the owner and she has three beautiful children: Vincent,
Gabriella and Maya. Isabelle is originally from Québec and is the co-founder of Éco-coco. She set up a workshop to transform the coconut into decorative
artefacts and jewels. The workshop is in walking distance from your cuarto. But
the gift shop is right on the premises. The gift shop is also one of the
attractions of the Isla as it is built from red clay and recycled materials
like glass and glass bottles.
The Installations
The
cuartos are at the beginning of a 20 km (15 miles) beach and are situated right
on the beach at the beginning of the village. You will be living in a purely
Mexican surrounding (rooster will call the sunrise and Mexican music will
always be present). The musical surrounding is extremely variable. We have
lived at the Isla many times and at different periods of the year (January,
April, and November). Mornings are calm and, after the song of the roosters,
you can have your breakfast with the sounds of the waves as background. The
village is slowly waking up and the deliveries are starting: tortillas, fresh
chicken and fish, water, gas, vegetables... Around noon it could be more
animated, we can hear Mexican music which gets a little louder by the end of
the afternoon and in the evening. Generally it gets quieter by 9h00 pm except
if there is a Fiesta.
During
the Easter holiday which is the most important holiday in Mexico, the music
will get louder and will last longer during this 2 week period. There is an air
of Fiesta. Between the months of May and November, the atmosphere is more
relaxed because it is warmer and there are less people on the Isla.
Each
one of the cuartos has a kitchen with stove (no oven) and fridge and also a
good variety of cookware to make your own meals. You will also find ingredients
left by the previous tenants (salt, pepper, sugar, coffee, tea, dishwashing
liquid, cleaning liquid, toilet paper, etc...).
We would ask that you replace what you will have finished. Pass forward.
There
is also a brasero (Bar-B-Q) to grill on the terrace and a hammock for the
siesta. You can find charcoal at the Super Cty Deli at the embarcadero.
The water
You
will need bottled water to drink, cook, brush your teeth, etc… No problem. Water
is not expensive. You will have a 5 gallon bottle upon your arrival and also a
spare one. When you have an empty one, pay attention to the
water delivery truck that passes at different times during the day, but mainly
in the mornings, and honks its horn. Just call out ‘’Agua’’ and he will
stop and bring you a bottle for 12 pesos and the empty one. For the Iguana, it
may be more difficult to hear the truck go by, so just give your empty and 12
pesos to Isabelle and they will make sure you get your bottle of water. If your
empty bottle is too old, he may not want to take it back and will ask you for
60 pesos for a new one as an empty bottle is worth 50
pesos.
The groceries 
There
are many convenience stores (Abarrotes) on the island and some are very near
your cuartos. We find that Magdalena, the owner of ‘Abarrotes Los Mangos (in
front of the police station), may be the best. You can even order fresh chicken
for the day after. Two fruit and vegetable trucks pass by every day around
noon. They also have eggs and other articles. Their owners will gladly tell you
the names of the fruits and vegetables in Spanish.
Near
the embarcadero there is a grocery store called the Super City Deli with a good
variety of products including Cerveza and Tequila. The local beer is the Pacifico, you can see the brewery across the bay, which also
brews the Corona and Modelo.
There
is also a big public market and a big grocery store ‘’Ley’’ (on Melchor Ocampo
street) in the old part of Mazatlan.
If
you are coffee lovers, you will need to buy it near the Plaza Machado in
Mazatlan, at the El Faro or at the Casa Etnika. Their house blends and their
coffee from the Chiapas are remarkable.
The
restaurants
You
can trust all the restaurants on the Isla. We never got sick. There are many
little restaurants on the beach. From your cuarto and heading east on your left
there is ‘’El Cardon’’ (next to the R.V. Park). Heading west on your right
there is Victor, Lettie, Carmelita and many others. They are all tourist
restaurants and they all close at the end of the afternoon except Carmelita
which stays open later and Lettie where they will be glad to serve you if you
show up around 5h30 or 6h00 pm.
For
a lighter meal you can go to Miguel’s at the corner of your street, Calle
Antero, and the Calle Principal. There are also many restaurants at the
embarcadero and near the Super. They are all Mexican snack bars and they are
not expensive.
For
a more elaborate dinner, there are all the Mazatlan restaurants and more
particularly those around the Plaza Machado which is closed to traffic at
night.
Money
For
your usual expenses, you will need Pesos. Upon your arrival at the airport, you
will find an ATM. On the Isla, the nearest ATM is near the embarcadero in
Mazatlan. When you get off the boat, follow the street up to the corner and
follow the boulevard to your right. You will see a Pemex gas station on the
other side of the street. Pass the Pemex you will see a construction company as
well as the Water Company (Jumapan). Cross the street and at the foot of a blue
building you will find an ATM of the Banorte bank.
If you prefer you can also take a pulmonia at
the embarcadero and ask to be driven to the Cathedral and all around you will
find banks and ATMs. From the Cathedral you can easily walk to the public
market (Mercado) or to the Plaza Machado.
Laundry
You can go see Senora Lilia Cardenas, the owner
of Lavenderia Rosita (on Miguel Cardenas street right before the Éco-coco
workshop).
Fan
In
the Iguana, the fans and ceiling lights are remote controlled. Please make sure
that you leave the remote in the cuarto. In case of breakage or lost, make sure
to leave 500 pesos for its replacement.
Internet
There is an Internet local near the Super
City Deli. It is slow but only costs 12 pesos an hour.
For those who have a laptop, there is an
internet connection for the cuartos. The server is in Isabelle’s house and the
Router is in the Aquila. Make sure to ask for your password.
